By Mark DaCosta- In a shocking incident, an explosion at a Mobil gas station in Georgetown claimed the life of a six-year-old girl and injured several others on the evening of October 26, 2025. The tragedy highlights ongoing concerns regarding safety and security, as investigators work tirelessly to unravel the circumstances surrounding this catastrophic event.

Reports indicate that the explosion occurred shortly after 7:30 PM near the crucial cooking gas storage area of the fuel station, located at the intersection of Regent and King Streets. The tragic victim, Saraya Bourne, was travelling in a silver Toyota Premio with her relatives when the blast shook the vicinity, causing extensive damage not only to the vehicle but also to nearby structures and property. The vehicle was reportedly lifted into the air before crashing back down under the force of the explosion. The impact left Saraya with critical injuries, and despite rapid medical intervention, she was pronounced dead upon arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

The incident unfolded after witnesses reported seeing a foreign national, described as Spanish-speaking, arrive at the gas station earlier in the evening carrying two large black plastic bags. Eyewitness accounts suggest that this individual attempted to deposit the bags into a waste bin but was stopped by a gas station attendant who prevented the potential disposal. Following this encounter, the suspect left the premises heading south along King Street, just moments before the explosion ripped through the gas station.

Investigating authorities have identified this encounter as a crucial element in their ongoing inquiry, working under a theory that the bags may have contained hazardous materials. Several fragments of the black plastic bags, adhesive tape, and other debris were collected as evidence and sent for forensic analysis, with police confirming that closed-circuit television footage is also being scrutinised to aid the investigation. According to a police statement, “The individual subsequently left the area, heading south along King Street to the western side of the fuel station.”

As authorities dig deeper into the circumstances surrounding the explosion, there seems to be a palpable tension in the air. Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond convened a meeting with security officials, reflecting concerns that have risen across the nation due to this devastating event. The Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken, expressed on behalf of the Guyana Police Force, “The Force assures the public that every effort is being made to bring justice in this tragic matter.”

This tragic incident is not an isolated occurrence; it comes in the wake of previous explosive devices detonating in our capital, raising questions about the safety of the public stemming from inadequate oversight and political will. Back in May, two explosions rocked Georgetown, attributed to a suspected coordinated attack involving foreign nationals. The recurrence of such violence — coupled with the government’s lukewarm response — has stoked fears among citizens regarding security and safety protocols.

Additionally, allegations that the local police force has been inadequately equipped to handle such threats have stirred unrest within communities. The situation at the Mobil gas station further highlights not only the pressing need for enhanced security measures but also the public’s growing frustration with a government seemingly ill-prepared to safeguard its citizens.

As relatives of the injured and deceased gather at hospitals and community centres, reports reveal heartbreak and sorrow. The father of young Saraya expressed profound grief, reflecting on a simple request from his daughter for a meal from KFC — a memory now tragically tainted by the senseless violence that led to her untimely death.

Citizens across our nation are demanding justice, with calls for accountability echoing through the streets of Georgetown. President Irfaan Ali, while currently abroad, has stated that a full-scale investigation will be conducted into the incident. However, the question remains: Will this lead to the meaningful action required to ensure the safety and security of our citizens, or will it merely become another chapter in a series of unaddressed crises under this administration?

As we navigate the aftermath of this catastrophic event, the need for substantive change and heightened vigilance in our nation has never been more evident. The loss of Saraya Bourne serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the paramount importance of safety in our communities. In the face of tragedy, our collective resolve must remain focused on ensuring that such senseless acts of violence never tarnish our homeland again.
