The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) has recorded a successful half year for several key verification services it provides to stakeholders. From January to June 2025, the Bureau’s Legal Metrology Department conducted 21,507 verifications of measuring instruments used in trade countrywide for accuracy, as compared with 19,805 verifications during the same period in 2024.
During the first half of 2025, Inspectors verified 2369 scales, 1487 masses, 90 weighbridges, 1086 petrol pumps, 175 bulk meters, 16 flow meters, 16,008 electricity meters, 12 storage tanks and 41 moisture meters used at rice mills countrywide.
When compared with the same period last year, there were some notable increases in verification in specific areas. Particularly, there was a 16 percent increase in the number of Tanker wagons verified by the GNBS, which is a prerequisite to obtaining licenses from the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA). Additionally, the number of electricity meters verified in 2025 almost doubled when compared to those verified in 2024. Increased manufacturing, construction, and retail activities across Guyana are key contributors in the spike in verification services this year.

Regarding verification services provided for law enforcement, there were increased submissions of speed guns and breathalysers by the Guyana Police Force for verification so far for this year. A total of forty-three (43) speed guns were verified already for 2025 as compared with 3 for the same period in 2024. Meanwhile, for breathalysers, GNBS verified twenty-nine (29) in the first half of 2025 as compared with five (5) for the same period last year.
GNBS also continued the verification of Net Content of Prepackaged Goods to ensure consumers received correct quantities of products purchased, hence receiving value for money. So far for 2025, the Net Content programme continued at manufacturers’ premises with 104 verifications of prepackaged items sold by mass. This activity, which boosts consumer confidence, will soon be expanded by GNBS to sale outlets.
It is imperative to underscore Government’s contributions to the success of the National Measurement programme. The Government of Guyana continues to ensure that the GNBS has the requisite resources to conduct its measurement functions reliably. These resources include new state-of-the-art measurement laboratories and equipment along with the construction of a fully fitted fuel tanker verification rack at the end of 2024, the opening of suboffices within the various administrative regions and the provision of resources to increase the employment of qualified technical staff.
Moving ahead, the Legal Metrology Department of GNBS has already commenced the verification of measuring instruments for the second half of 2025. Verification has started at rice mills, gas stations, supermarkets, and bulk terminals countrywide to ensure accuracy and equity in trade; safeguarding farmers and consumers as they participate in trading and purchasing activities.
Finally, users of measuring instruments are encouraged to submit their instruments for verification to the GNBS Main office in Sophia or to any of its Sub Offices located in the various administrative regions. Verification of measuring instruments provides confidence in the business environment.
