Residents of Bush Lot Village, West Coast Berbice, in Region Five, are now benefiting from the establishment of the area’s first youth-friendly centre and sewing hub — a significant step forward in community development spearheaded by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.

The initiative, launched under the Ministry’s Family Enhancement Services Section (FESS), offers young people a welcoming space designed to foster creativity, relaxation, and personal growth. The centre also provides access to mentorship and counselling, ensuring youth have the support they need to navigate life’s challenges.

A key feature of the facility is the sewing hub, which is open to both men and women in the community. It aims to build practical skills that can lead to economic empowerment and independence, especially through a trade that continues to see steady demand.

In addition to supporting young people, the Ministry also unveiled the Golden Generation Hub — a dedicated area for senior citizens to gather, socialise, and participate in wellness and technology activities. This initiative is designed to combat loneliness among the elderly, while helping them stay engaged and connected in a fast-changing digital world.

Similar centres were introduced over the past year in Westminster Village, Region Three, and Victoria on the East Coast of Demerara.
