This is not an era to gamble with our country’s resources

Political Fear Is Guyana’s Elephant in the Room

Dear Editor,

There comes a time in the life of every nation when its people must pause, reflect, and make a critical decision—not just for themselves, but for the generations yet to come. Today, I write not out of malice but out of deep concern for the direction in which our beloved country is heading, under the clouded rule of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) and its chief puppeteer, Bharrat Jagdeo.

To my Indian brothers and sisters: it pains me to say this, but the remnants of a “Coolie mentality”—that narrow, caste-driven, divisive thinking—still lingers within some of us. A mentality that continues to put tribe over truth, face over fact, and political loyalty over moral clarity. This must end. If we continue to close our eyes while the nation burns, we are no better than a blind kingdom being led by a one-eyed king—a fitting metaphor for the PPP regime that governs not with wisdom or fairness, but with arrogance, intimidation, and a thirst for power.

Bharrat Jagdeo’s behaviour, riddled with political bullying, unchecked ego, and contempt for the working class, is unacceptable. His actions have shown a disregard for transparency, ethics, and equality. We must no longer stay silent when our livelihoods are trampled, our youth are manipulated, and our cultural identity is used as a political pawn. His divisive tactics and blatant disregard for decency are beneath the dignity of any public servant—worse than what some would scornfully label “a chaamar,”.

This is not an era to gamble with our country’s resources. This is not a time to sit idle and hope things will get better. It is a moment that demands courage, wisdom, and unity. We must think—not as divided camps, but as one people. We must rise—not in rage, but in righteous resistance.

I urge my Indian brothers and sisters: start thinking right for your future generations. If we do not reject corruption, if we do not stand firm in what we believe, if we tolerate the exploitation and political manipulation of our people, then our children will inherit a legacy of pain, poverty, and shame.

Let us not bow. Let us not be bought. Let us rise. Let our voices be forced to be heard—loud, proud, and unafraid. Because the soul of this country depends on it. I SAY TO YOU, I’M WITH YOU IN THIS FIGHT!!!

Yours truly,
Pt.Ubraj Narine, JP, COA
Former Staff Sgt.(GDF), Mayor
