Dear Editor,

I have decided to add my voice to the issue surrounding the unjust detention of a young, upcoming singer, Mr. Daniel Wharton, also known as Baby Skello. I have not listened to the lyrics of the song in question, but based on the views expressed by various individuals, it appears that the lyrics caused significant offence within the Hindu community.

If the lyrics were indeed disrespectful or offensive toward the Hindu religious community, I do not condone such actions. As a believer, I cannot stand by when any religion is discredited or disrespected.

However, we must examine the harsh punishment handed down by Magistrate Judy Latchman. I recall that when the matter first came to public attention, the Ethnic Relations Commission (ERC) intervened, and Mr. Wharton publicly apologized. I am encouraged that many right-thinking Guyanese have since spoken out against the Magistrate’s decision.

There are numerous pressing issues facing our country, from rampant domestic violence (including allegations involving senior figures in the PPP/C government), to the misuse and abuse of public funds, and a grieving family and nation still seeking justice for Adrianna Younge; all with little to no consequence. Meanwhile, our Constitution is seemingly being manipulated to work against the poor and vulnerable, while others benefit without accountability. How fair is that?

I trust that the counsel representing Mr. Wharton will promptly file a bail application in the High Court to secure his release. If this matter is not addressed justly, it will instill fear among our local artists. Many may begin to question their future in the industry after witnessing what has happened to this young man.

I therefore call on the Judicial Service Commission to review the actions of Magistrate Judy Latchman.

Yours sincerely,
Annette Ferguson, MP
