By Mark DaCosta- In the early hours of Sunday morning, a devastating fire broke out at the Church Hall on Joseph Pollydore Street in Lodge, Georgetown, believed to have been ignited by a faulty light bulb. Fortunately, no injuries or displacements were reported.

At approximately 05:20 hours, the Guyana Fire Service received an urgent call regarding the fire. Responding promptly, firefighters arrived to find the two-storey structure engulfed in flames. The Church Hall, constructed from wood and concrete, is owned by the Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill. Firefighters faced a challenging situation, as the blaze had already taken hold, causing significant destruction to both the building’s framework and its interior.

The fire response team dispatched three fire tenders — with some 18 highly-trained firefighters on duty. Commanded by Officers S/L Watts, S/L Devent, L/FM Roberts, and L/FM Thompson, the team employed two jets from W/C #23 and W/C #24 for extinguishing the flames. Their swift action was instrumental in preventing what could have been an even greater disaster.

Investigations conducted by the fire authorities indicate that the fire originated from a defective light bulb that sparked and arced circuit, igniting surrounding combustible materials. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, leaving both the occupants and the local community safe despite the significant structural loss. Bishop Edghill, while mourning the loss of the building, expressed relief that there were no injuries in the incident.

This unfortunate event highlights the ever-present risks associated with electrical fixtures and appliances. The Guyana Fire Service has taken this incident as an opportunity to reiterate the importance of proper electrical maintenance. They have consistently urged our citizens to be vigilant, ensuring that all electrical systems are not only up to standard but also regularly assessed for any potential hazards.

In a country where many families rely on electrical appliances for their daily activities, the imperative for safety cannot be overstated. This fire should serve as a wake-up call for all homeowners and business owners alike. Simple precautions, such as regularly checking light bulbs, maintaining electrical wires, and avoiding overloads, can prevent dire consequences.
