As Guyanese across the Diaspora mark the nation’s 59th anniversary of independence, this year’s celebration in Brooklyn carried a solemn and powerful undertone. Guyana won political independence from Britain on 26th May, 1966.

The annual Guyana Independence Parade and Unity Concert, set for Sunday, June 1, in New York has been dedicated to the memory of 11-year-old Adrianna Younge, whose tragic death in Guyana shocked the nation and ignited global calls for justice.

Organised by the Guyana Independence Celebration Committee New York, the parade will begin at 12:00 p.m. at Church and Brooklyn Avenues, proceed east along Church Avenue to Utica Avenue, and head south to Glenwood Road, where the Unity Concert will take place at 4:00 p.m. at 1450 Utica Avenue.

This year’s parade is more than a cultural showcase—it is a public tribute to a young life cut short under disturbing circumstances. Adrianna Younge’s parents have flown to New York to participate in the event and will receive a posthumous United States Congressional honour on behalf of their daughter during the commemorations.

The decision to dedicate the parade to Adrianna underscores the deep connection between the Guyanese-American community and pressing issues back home. Her case has drawn widespread outrage, not only for the circumstances surrounding her death but also for the perceived mishandling by Guyanese law enforcement. Many see her memory as a rallying cry for greater justice and accountability in Guyana.

The Unity Concert is expected to feature prominent Guyanese artistes, cultural performances, and moments of reflection, transforming the day from a mere celebration into a powerful act of remembrance and unity.

As the Guyanese flag flies high over Brooklyn, the memory of Adrianna Younge will serve as a poignant reminder of the work still needed to ensure safety, justice, and dignity for all Guyanese—at home and abroad.

11-year-old Adrianna Younge tragically died at the Double Day Hotel pool in Tuschen, East Bank Essequibo, Guyana, on April 24, 2025. Her body was discovered less than 24 hours in the hotel’s pool after she was reported missing. Her cause of death, by drowning, as announced by the Government, remains disputed.
