The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has launched a search operation for one of its soldiers, Lance Corporal Stefon Tudor, who went missing earlier today during a routine river patrol in the Cuyuni River, near the Guyana-Venezuela border.

According to a statement issued by the GDF, Lance Corporal Tudor was part of a Riverain Patrol in the Makapa area when he reportedly fell into the river near the Makapa rapids between 2:00 p.m and 3:00 p.m. Troops stationed at Eteringbang and Makapa are currently engaged in efforts to locate the missing soldier.

“The Guyana Defence Force will spare no resources to continue its efforts,” the statement said, adding that the family of Lance Corporal Tudor has been informed of the situation.

In addition to the ongoing search and rescue operation, the GDF has convened a Board of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The Cuyuni River, known for its strong currents and treacherous rapids, presents challenging conditions for both patrol and recovery missions. The GDF has not yet released further details on the events leading up to the incident but emphasised its commitment to uncovering the full facts.

Within recent months many tragedies have befallen the Guyana’s soldiers in the Cuyuni area. They have come under severe attack from Venezuelans.

Updates will be provided as the search continues.May be an image of map and text
