BROOKLYN, NEW YORK — The parents of 11-year-old Guyanese murder victim Adriana Younge, Mr. Subrian Younge and Ms. Amecia Simon, are currently in the United States to accept a posthumous Congressional honor on behalf of their late daughter. The honor, issued by the United States Congress, recognizes Adriana’s memory and the tragic loss that has deeply impacted both Guyana and the diaspora community.
While in the U.S., the family will also meet with pathologists to be briefed on the results of a second autopsy conducted on Adriana’s body, providing further insights into the circumstances of her death.
As part of their visit, Adriana’s family will take part in the annual Guyana Independence Parade in Brooklyn on Sunday, June 1, 2025, which has been dedicated to her memory. The Guyana Independence Celebration Committee is calling on all Guyanese and friends of Guyana to turn out in large numbers to honor Adriana and stand in support of her family’s ongoing call for justice.
Several high-profile U.S. officials have confirmed attendance, including Democratic Leader of the U.S. Congress, Hon. Hakeem Jeffries, members of Congress, state and local officials, community leaders, and New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
The parade will begin at 12:00 noon at the intersection of Church and Brooklyn Avenues, proceeding along Church Avenue to Utica Avenue, and concluding at 1450 Utica Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11203 (between Glenwood Road & Farragut Road), the site of the Guyana Unity Concert.
As the largest Guyanese celebration outside of Guyana, and one of the premier West Indian events in New York City after the Labor Day Parade, the Guyana Independence Celebration draws thousands of attendees annually, along with over one million online viewers.
This year, the Committee has also designated June 1, 2025, as “Guyana National Flag Day in the Diaspora.” All Guyanese are encouraged to carry and display the Guyana flag at the parade and concert and to proudly showcase the flag at homes, businesses, and on vehicles in a show of patriotism and solidarity. This act of unity also stands as a powerful rejection of Venezuela’s false and hostile claims to Guyana’s Essequibo region.
