Georgetown, Guyana — The Alliance For Change (AFC) and the nation of Guyana are today mourning the loss of Valerie Garrido-Lowe, a trailblazing political leader, former government minister, and one of the founding figures of the AFC. Garrido-Lowe passed away early this morning from a heart attack. She was 64.

A long-standing and deeply committed member of the AFC, Garrido-Lowe was remembered in an official statement from the party as a “fearless advocate for the people of Guyana,” particularly for the rights and development of Indigenous communities.

Serving as Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs from 2015 to 2020, she was widely respected for her passionate defense of Amerindian rights, her deep engagement with hinterland communities, and her role in advancing sustainable development and education in some of the most underserved regions of the country.

“Valerie was not just a politician; she was a visionary and a fighter for equity,” a statement from the AFC read. “Her passionate voice, unwavering commitment, and sincere compassion earned her the respect and admiration of all who worked alongside her.”

Born and raised in Georgetown with roots in both coastal and hinterland Guyana, Garrido-Lowe built a career that spanned education, communication, and politics. She was a woman of conviction, grace, and grit, unafraid to speak her truth and push boundaries in the male-dominated political space.

Her leadership within the AFC helped shape the party’s policy vision and deepen its engagement with Indigenous populations. Garrido-Lowe was known for her humility and accessibility, frequently traveling to the country’s interior to listen firsthand to residents’ concerns.

Beyond politics, she was a mother, mentor, and role model to many.

“We extend our deepest condolences to her children, family members, friends, and all those whose lives she touched,” the AFC statement continued. “Valerie’s passing is a profound loss not only to our party but to the entire nation.”

Funeral arrangements and further details will be released in the coming days.

Valerie Garrido-Lowe’s legacy is one of service, integrity, and indelible impact. She leaves behind a country that is better for her efforts, and a generation inspired by her example.

May she rest in eternal peace.
