It is almost incomprehensible that the Guyana Police Force, an institution which claims to take the protection of life seriously, would have as its Standard Operating Procedure, a mandatory 24hr waiting period following report of a missing child.

Moreover, it beggars belief that a supposedly discipline unit, would need to reiterate to its officers, the importance of treating all missing persons reports with the highest level of seriousness, professionalism, and sensitivity. In fact, considering this police force characterises itself as a professional and discipline unit, we the tax-paying masses assumed, erringly so, that the aforementioned qualities were a given.

Adrianna Younge.

However, the catastrophic events of last week, where Adrianna Younge died under the most suspicious of circumstances, reminded us that the police, not dissimilar to this installed government, is as corrupt as is incompetent.

And when this corruption is examined in the context of, the recent extrajudicial killings in Linden, one has to conclude, the police is more dutiful in serving their political masters, than we the tax-paying masses.

In fact, this differential treatment of the tax-paying masses, was no more evident than in their cursory search of the hotel premises, compounded by the tragic failure to interview potential witnesses, who might have had critical information on Adrianna’s whereabouts.

But even as we the tax-paying masses grapple with the police blinding incompetence, unprepared we were for their press release, overflowing with toddler level fabrication.

For it is public record, the hotel manager informed the listening many that the CCTV cameras, for reasons unknown, were not working. Moreover, it is also public record that Adrianna’s parents viewed an evidentiary CCTV, on a neighbouring house, which demonstrated beyond doubt, that she never left the hotel. Yet, despite this irrefutable evidence in the public domain, the corruptible police through a press release were to proclaim, Adrianna entered a red and black Toyota Raum car of registration PSS 4684. Then, not satisfied with their fanciful narrative, the police went on to elaborate that guided by CCTV images, Adrianna on entering the said car, was driven off in the direction of Vreed-en-Hoop.

And with this press release turning out to be a most embarrassing concoction, demonstrably contradicting the CCTV evidence, the shameless police with pants down, regrouped to fabricate what they believed to be a more believable narrative. Then, having regrouped to fabricate what they believed to be a more believable narrative, the beleaguered police through another press release, asserted that the statement circulated to the masses was repleted with inaccuracies. Therefore, with the press release exposed as unadulterated fabrication, the shamelessly corrupt police were to propose a review of its internal communication process, leading to the release of the manufactured statement.

Now, having misrepresented, their admission, that seen on the CCTV, the unmistakable inference is, the police in collusion with perpetrators unknown, endeavoured to cover-up the circumstances surrounding Adrianna’s death. And with this collusion forefront, many are of the justified conclusion that the postmortem having established cause of death, can’t provide answers as to the circumstances surrounding death.

So, with this dark cloud of unanswered questions hanging over the police, they out of desperation, attempt reassurance of the tax-paying masses, on a comprehensive police investigation. However, considering the extent of their corruption and incompetence, lay bare in this tragic case, we would argue that this represents an occasion when international assistance should be sought.

For the conclusion is irrefutable, this installed government through their police politicisation, has created a servile unit, slavishly answerable to its political masters. And such police politicisation, was no more evident than in the appointment of a police commissioner, an unashamed lackey, who is devoid of the requisite qualifications, academic or constitutional. Thus, even as we lay blame at the feet of the police for Adrianna Younge’s death, ultimate responsibility has to be the installed government, for their naked politicisation of the Guyana Police Force.
