The University of Guyana (UG) officially opened its application process for the 2025/2026 academic year at midnight on April 1, 2025, offering a wide range of Diploma, Degree, and Certificate programmes. This year’s application season comes with a significant incentive: tuition is now free for all students—both new and continuing—across all levels of study, including Diploma, Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD programmes.

The tuition-free policy, which took effect on January 1, 2025, is expected to significantly boost interest in UG’s offerings. Applications are already pouring in, with the University currently receiving over 1,200 applications per week. The application window closes on May 16, 2025.

UG is encouraging students, especially those currently sitting CSEC exams, to apply early. Students can apply even if their final exam results are pending, and the University advises that they request CXC to send results directly to UG to speed up the admissions process. Some programmes may offer provisional acceptance while applicants await their final grades.

All information regarding available programmes, application steps, and updates are accessible through UG’s official channels, including its website (uog.edu.gy), Facebook page, and the Student Records Management System (SRMS). The University also plans to disseminate updates via press releases and advertisements through its media partners.

In Guyana free university education is a right that is expressly outlined in Article 27 of the Constitution of Guyana. Said articles guarantees: “Every citizen has the right to free education from nursery to university as well as at non-formal places where opportunities are provided for education and training.” This constitutional right to free university education was taken away in 1994 by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government.

With high demand anticipated due to the tuition waiver, UG is urging prospective students to apply as soon as possible to secure a place in their desired programmes before capacity limits are reached.
