By Roysdale Forde S.C, M.P.- The arrest and detention of social media influencer, Ms. Melissa “Melly Mel” Atwell, in the United States has sparked widespread concern, with every major political party in the National Assembly speaking out, except for the People’s Progressive Party (PPP).

Ms. Atwell, a Guyanese citizen and passport holder, is being detained on allegations of an immigration infraction. While her outspoken criticism of the PPP government, particularly in relation to corruption and accountability, may have made her a target, that does not justify ignoring the rights she is entitled to as a citizen. These rights are guaranteed under both Guyanese and international law.

Several critical facts have come to light:

  1. Ms. Atwell is being detained by U.S. authorities on alleged immigration violations, and this occurred shortly after President Irfaan Ali’s visit to the United States, where he met with U.S. officials.

  2. Last year, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs Anil Nandlall, S.C., M.P., filed a $100 million lawsuit against Ms. Atwell in Guyana’s courts, with the explicit aim of having her returned to Guyana to face charges.

  3. Recently, it was revealed that the Ali government has entered into a secretive, high-priced contract with Carlos Trujillo, a former U.S. Ambassador to the Organisation of American States (OAS) under President Donald Trump. Trujillo is now being paid $50,000 per month as a lobbyist for the PPP government.

These are not trivial matters. The PPP cannot afford to dismiss the mounting suspicion that Ms. Atwell’s detention is more than a mere immigration issue—it has the unmistakable stench of political manipulation. The growing consensus is that this may be an orchestrated move to use the law as a tool to silence a critic.

At today’s press conference, Vice President Jagdeo must come forward and give clear, direct answers to the nation and the international community. Specifically, he must address:

  1. The PPP’s stance on the alleged immigration violation committed by Ms. Atwell.

  2. The extent, if any, to which the PPP government played a role in Ms. Atwell’s detention.

  3. What actions, if any, the Government of Guyana is taking to ensure that Ms. Atwell’s rights are upheld under both U.S. and international law.

This is a defining moment for Vice President Jagdeo and the PPP. They must rise above vitriol and petty political games, and act in the best interest of Guyana and its citizens. The PPP government has an opportunity today to prove that it values the rule of law and the protection of citizens’ rights, no matter their political views or affiliations. Anything less would be an abdication of responsibility.
