The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security has unveiled a new initiative aimed at enhancing police readiness and response to family violence cases across the country. So said the ministry in a release. The Sexual Offences & Domestic Violence Policy Unit (SO&DVPU) launched the Police Advanced Training & Readiness for Operational Leverage (P.A.T.R.O.L.)  programme on Wednesday, February 19, marking a step toward improving the handling of family violence incidents in Guyana.

The inaugural session, held at the Guyana Police Force’s Division 4 ‘A’ in Georgetown, saw the participation of 26 officers—nine female and 17 male—who underwent an intensive training programme. This session focused on critical aspects of family violence intervention, with a special emphasis on the newly enacted Family Violence Act 2024.

Officers were educated on their specific roles in addressing family violence cases, the importance of interagency collaboration, and the support mechanisms available through the Ministry and the Childcare & Protection Agency.

The P.A.T.R.O.L. initiative is seen as a vital component of the ministry’s ongoing efforts to enhance the capacity of the police force to handle family violence cases with the sensitivity and urgency they demand. The ministry believes equipping the police with the requisite knowledge and skills could ensure victims of family violence receive timely, appropriate, and effective support.”

The P.A.T.R.O.L. programme is not only focused on training but also on fostering stronger connections between the police and the communities they serve. As part of this initiative, officers will participate in community walk-throughs in high-risk areas to raise awareness about family violence, the legal resources available, and how the community can work together to prevent abuse.

For more information about the P.A.T.R.O.L. initiative or to get involved in upcoming community walk-throughs, contact the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security or visit their website.
