Mr. Nigel Hughes has called for a full investigation into the lease of property he has acquired, raising important questions about the accountability of those in power. This call is not only a plea for transparency but also an opportunity for Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo to prove his commitment to the principles of good governance that he has often advocated. It is now time for the Vice President to extend his efforts beyond personal matters and address the more concerning allegations surrounding the land deals involving Mr. Ed Ahmad and Dr. Baldeo and others.
The scale of the alleged corruption in the land allocation process during the tenure of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government is staggering. Thousands of acres of land have reportedly been given away without any semblance of due process, transparency, or public scrutiny. The lack of proper procedures raises serious concerns about friends, family and favouritism, kickbacks, and improper connections. If the PPP government is truly committed to upholding the rule of law, it must act swiftly and decisively to launch an independent investigation into these deals. Where is SOCU?
It is not enough for the vice president to dismiss these allegations with platitudes or vague promises of future scrutiny.
Bharrat Jagdeo has long been one of the most influential figures within the PPP to manipulate the public. The public is watching closely to see if he has the will and the courage to take action against corruption within his own ranks including his very own Ministers and political appointed CEO of the ministry of Housing and Water. Will he stand by his words of promoting accountability and scrutiny, or will he allow his own government’s murky dealings to continue unchecked?
It is a demand for justice and fairness. It is a request for the government to come clean for the citizens of Guyana to see that their leaders are held to the highest standards of integrity. If Vice President Jagdeo is serious about his commitment to eliminating corruption, he must act now. This is his chance to prove that he has the political will and moral fortitude to do what is right, no matter how difficult or controversial it may be.
Failure to take decisive action would only strengthen the perception that corruption continues to thrive unchecked in the corridors of the PPP government. For the sake of the country’s future and the faith of its people, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo must not shy away from taking bold, transparent steps to address these allegations. Let this be a moment of reckoning for the PPP government—a time to choose transparency over secrecy, integrity over expediency, and accountability over complicity. If not, the PPP government will continue to be labelled as the government of corruption, confusion, and total destruction for the future of Guyana’s democracy and its citizens.
