The Alliance For Change (AFC) recently met with the Private Sector Commission (PSC) as part of the AFC’s ongoing “Listening and Grounding” initiative. So said the party in a statement. The meeting, described as cordial and fully representative of both sides, centered on key national issues, including the conduct of elections and the need for biometric voter identification.

During the discussion, the AFC underscored its concerns over the lack of biometric systems at polling stations. The AFC’s concern emphasises the critical role such technology plays in ensuring free, fair, and credible elections. The absence of biometrics could further undermine the integrity of Guyana’s electoral process, a concern echoed by many stakeholders who have been calling for its immediate implementation.

The Private Sector Commission, however, expressed confidence in the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) and its ability to conduct credible elections. In contrast, the AFC voiced its lack of confidence in GECOM’s Chairman ret’d Justice Claudette Singh and operations, presenting supporting information to substantiate its position.

Meanwhile, GECOM has announced that there is insufficient time to introduce biometric identification ahead of the next elections. This statement has sparked criticism, as many believe the delay could jeopardize the transparency and fairness of the electoral process.

The AFC said it is scheduled to meet with GECOM before the end of the month to discuss these concerns in greater detail. The PSC, keen to continue the dialogue, has proposed reconvening after the AFC’s meeting with GECOM to assess progress and exchange further views on Guyana’s pressing political and developmental challenges.

Beyond elections, AFC raised the issue of protection of Guyana’s borders amid the ongoing border controversy with Venezuela. There is growing concern over the absence of a national front on this matter, which has broader implications for national security and international diplomacy.
