Buxton/ Strathspey receive promises from President Ali, skeptical of his commitment

In a move many see as long overdue, President Irfaan Ali announced Saturday  that his Government will focus on transformative agricultural projects in Buxton and Strathspey, located on the East Coast of Demerara.

This comes after years of perceived neglect of opposition strongholds, like Buxton, during the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) years in government, leaving many residents wondering if these initiatives are a genuine effort to empower communities or a calculated move ahead of upcoming elections, with some fearing it could be a ploy to buy votes.

During a series of outreaches to these communities, the President engaged residents, discussing how to address long-standing issues and foster community growth, the  release said.

In Buxton, the President outlined plans to identify 25 acres of land for development into one of the country’s largest pork production projects, involving farmers, agriculture groups, women, and youth.

“We are here to focus on your community. We are here to focus on how we can further build your community,” the President stated, adding that his Government is ready to implement innovative agricultural practices to boost local production and create jobs.

While these projects could indeed offer long-term economic opportunities, many Buxton residents remain cautious.

Having faced years of neglect and broken promises, they are understandably skeptical about whether this initiative will deliver lasting change or if it is merely an election tactic to secure votes in a traditionally opposition-held area.

Meanwhile, in Strathspey, the President spoke about a partnership with young people and women to establish 50 beehives and provide training on sustainable beekeeping.

The goal, according to the President, is to enhance agricultural productivity while increasing the involvement of youth and women in community development and economic opportunities.

“We are going to give you all the hives, we are going to give you all the safety gear and equipment, and NAREI will provide you with the training,” he promised.

The president also revealed plans for a community sewing project in Buxton and a learning resource centre for youth training and mentorship.
