Why is the Government continuing to insult us?

Dear Editor,

[Friday’s] Stabroek News Editorial titled “ Human dignity in cash grant programme” is useful reading for every Guyanese. For me it points to a very serious weakness in the Ali-Jagdeo administration, that is instead of genuine consultation we are relying heavily on a well staffed  propaganda outfit.

The People Did Not Elect Government to Tell Them How to Eat

Over the holidays, I give examples I encountered in this area. One, a young forty-two years Constabulary rank who has a five year old sickle-cell daughter, every month she has to find  nine thousand dollars to purchase drugs not available at any of the public institutions. This is typical where individuals are offered cheap substitutes for survivors  of a life threatening condition.

As an elderly person,  people in my community, Lodge Housing Scheme/MeadowBrook, are yet to receive this one hundred thousand dollars, which the President promised before Christmas. I would have thought some system would have been implemented to satisfy this talk of justice so that high paid salaried employees would not receive the same sum as the folks who are truly in need.

Next, they are told that the new Demerara Harbour Bridge will not be completed as earlier stated because we are told today that time is needed  for the concrete to settle.  Why is the Government continuing to insult our intelligence? Time for settling of concrete and other factors are things that should have been taken into account before the earlier announcement of a completion date. The bridge is not like building a fowl-pen and in a well ordered society  the persons who fixed a completion date, apparently without taking into account the time for the settlement of concrete should be disciplined because of technical and engineering incompetence.

Yours truly,
Hamilton Green
Elder
