At this year’s Conference of the Parties (COP29), the International Labour Organisation (ILO) will emphasise the importance of integrating labor rights, social dialogue, and decent work into climate policies to ensure a just transition to a greener economy. Scheduled to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan, on Nov. 11-22, the event will see the ILO advocating for climate action that leaves no one behind.

As a key UN observer at COP29, the ILO will ensure that the perspectives of workers are included in global climate discussions, as reported by ILO. The organization will push for policies that support marginalized groups, including women and indigenous communities, while ensuring that climate initiatives do not negatively impact those already vulnerable in the workforce.

Central to the ILO’s message will be the call for gender-responsive policies. These policies aim to both advance climate action and promote social justice, ensuring that workers are treated fairly as economies transition to more sustainable practices. By promoting inclusive policies, the ILO seeks to foster social protections that benefit all workers, especially those directly affected by the shift to a greener economy.

Another crucial area the ILO will highlight is climate resilience. The organisation stresses that universal social protection and occupational safety and health are fundamental to creating stable and resilient communities in the face of climate change. The transition to a green economy, the ILO argues, must involve sustainable business practices, skills development, and robust employment policies to ensure the creation of quality jobs.

In addition to its advocacy, the ILO will provide technical expertise at COP29 and facilitate knowledge exchange through various events, including the Just Transition Pavilion. These events will offer guidance on how to integrate these principles into national climate commitments. By doing so, the ILO aims to reinforce the message that inclusive policies and sustainable job creation are integral to achieving a fair, resilient future for all. (mexicobusinessnews)
