Minister of Tourism, Industry, and Commerce Onidge Walrond’s recent claims that Guyana was a “dead nation” under the APNU+AFC administration are a slap in the face to the hard work and dedication of many Guyanese. Her comments distort the truth and undermine the significant progress made by the previous government, says Opposition Parliamentarian Cathy Hughes.
Hon. Cathy Hughes, called out Minister Walrond’s falsehoods. “The foundation for Guyana’s current economic growth and transformation was laid by the APNU+AFC government from 2015 to 2020,” she stated. “The development of the oil and gas sector, the country’s most transformative factor, was initiated under their leadership.”
Village Voice News reached out to Parliamentarian Cathy Hughes since she was at the time of APNU+AFC government in leadership on the tourism sector. Hughes in her response stated that the APNU/AFC Government not only laid the groundwork but also fast-tracked the sector’s development, leading to “first oil” in 2019. This achievement has provided the current PPP/C government with a solid platform to build upon. However, Hughes stated that Minister Walrond seems either unaware of these facts or unwilling to acknowledge them.
Hon. Cathy Hughes continued, “Minister Walrond’s portrayal of the tourism sector as dormant under the APNU+AFC is equally misleading. The sector experienced consistent growth and development, thanks to the efforts of the private sector and the Guyana Tourism Authority (GTA).”
