The Alliance for Change (AFC) in a statement has applauded Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall’s ruling that awarded the sum of $2 million in compensatory damages to Ms. Roxanne Myers, former Deputy Chief Elections Officer of GECOM, who filed a claim for wrongful arrest and detention more than three years ago.
Myers was arrested on October 6, 2020, after she turned herself in at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, Eve Leary Georgetown, in the company of her Attorneys, Mr. Nigel Hughes and Mr. Ronald Daniels. Hughes is leader of the AFC.
Myers was promptly arrested for “perverting the course of justice” when she exercised her right to remain silent when questioned about matters related to the General and Regional Elections 2020. She was detained from 6th to 9th October 2020 in deplorable conditions at the Beterverwagting Police Station.
The court did not find that her detention amounted to inhumane treatment. No exemplary damages were awarded. The defendant was ordered to pay $2 million in costs on or before 9th September 2024.
Myers is among several individuals, including other current and former GECOM officials, as well as supporters of the opposition, who are facing charges related to electoral fraud.
