History of Lions Clubs International

A Search For Peace: The Story Of A Lion From Plains, Georgia. I CHOSE “SEARCH FOR PEACE” AS THE THEME OF MY YEAR AS 18 C DISTRICT GOVERNOR IN GEORGIA IN 1968-69. IT BECAME A THEME OF MY CAREER AS A PUBLIC SERVANT AND AS THE FOUNDER AND LEADER OF THE CARTER CENTER.

Dr. Shamir Andrew Ally served as Lions International DISTRICT GOVERNOR, 20-K2 District, LONG ISLAND, New York, in 1984-85. Joined CENTRAL DEMERARA LIONS CLUB on OCTOBER 1, 1968, then to LANSDALE Lions Club, Pennsylvania, then to INDIAN TRIAL Lions Club, North Carolina.

Lions International, with 1.4 MILLION MEMBERS in 49,000 clubs who bring hands and hearts to the communities WE SERVE, in 200 COUNTRIES and GEOGRAPHIC AREAS

GUYANA, Suriname, and Trinidad & Tobago is in DISTRICT 60-A.

Lions Past District Governor 1968-69, and USA President JIMMY CARTER, # 39, BIRTHDAY is OCTOBER 1, 1924. With 100th. BIRTHDAY, in cricket language 100 NOT OUT. Lions never know whom they will inspire to serve. When Jimmy Carter returned home to Plains, Georgia, in the early 1950s after a career in the U.S. Navy, he joined the Plains Lions Club, where HIS FATHER had been a CHARTER MEMBER.

DISTRICT 60-A with 14 Lions Clubs and 7 Leo Clubs in Suriname; 19 Lions Clubs and 6 Leo Clubs in Guyana; and 25 Lions Clubs and 5 Leo Clubs in Trinidad and Tobago.

Membership of the Lions Club is by “invitation only” as mandated by its constitution and by-laws. All member applicants need a sponsor who is an active member and of good standing in the club they intend to join. While sponsorship may be obtained by an applicant in order to become a legitimate member, sponsorship is no guarantee of membership. Acceptance of membership is still subject to the approval of the majority of the club’s board of directors.

A Lions Club chooses its members diligently as it requires time and financial commitments. Prospective applicants must be a person of good moral character in his or her community. Attendance at meetings is encouraged on a monthly or fortnightly basis. Due to the hierarchical nature of Lions Clubs International, members have the opportunity to advance from a local club to an office at the zone, district, multiple district, and international levels.

Lions International. The official colors are PURPLE and GOLD — PURPLE for LOYALTY and INTEGRITY, GOLD for SINCERITY, LIBERALITY, PURITY and GENEROSITY.

Lions adopted this simple motto WE SERVE in 1954 after an international contest among members. The FIVE Pillars of Lions Club COMMUNITY Service are VISION, HUNGER, DIABETES, CANCER, and ENVIRONMENT.

Our mission is to empower Lions clubs, volunteers and partners to improve health and wellbeing, strengthen communities, and support those in need through humanitarian service and grants that impact lives globally, and encourage peace and international understanding. And we fulfill it every day, everywhere WE SERVE.

Who are the famous members of Lions Club International? Among the famous and noteworthy members of Lions International are former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, a member of the Wokingham Lions Club and Royal Patron of the Lions Clubs of the British Isles, and Sir Edmund Hillary, a member of the Remuera Lions Club in New Zealand.

With the Renewed Assurances of My Highest Consideration.
