PPP’s total contempt for ordinary Guyanese

In the corridors of power, where decisions shape the destiny of our nation, the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government displays an alarming lack of sensitivity, and contempt for the very people it is meant to serve – ordinary Guyanese. This callous attitude is evident on multiple fronts, from the victimisation of teachers to the glaring inadequacies of the 2024 budget, which seems to favour the elite while neglecting the basic needs of the majority.

Amidst the oil riches flowing into our nation, the PPP’s treatment of teachers stands as a stark example of their disregard for the backbone of our education system. The ongoing, and necessary strike, initiated by the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU), reflects not only a demand for fair treatment but also a plea for recognition of the sacrifices made by educators who shape the future of our nation. The fact that the PPP government has labelled the strike as illegal and resorted to withholding pay and union dues raises serious questions about their commitment to upholding – or even acknowledging – the rights of workers and engaging in meaningful dialogue.

Observers have noted this troubling trend. One reputable observer highlights, “The PPP government’s response to the teachers’ strike raises concerns about adherence to international labour practices and respect for democratic principles.” This is not just a labour dispute; it is a battle for educational justice, as one local commentator aptly puts it.

The neglect, contempt, and callous disregard extends to the heart of our nation’s future – the 2024 budget. Despite the influx of oil revenues, the PPP budget appears to favour the interests of the PPP’s cronies and oligarchs, leaving ordinary Guyanese — including pensioners, children, and the disabled — struggling to make ends meet. The skewed allocation of resources, with a disproportionate focus on road construction and grandiose projects benefiting a select few – the PPP cronies – demonstrates a blatant disregard for the genuine needs of ordinary people.

As Guyanese navigate this ridiculous fiscal landscape, it becomes increasingly evident that the PPP’s priorities are horribly skewed. In the words of a seasoned Member of Parliament, “Our people know that budgets are about priorities. They know budgets tell who the Govt is, their philosophy.” Sadly, the philosophy reflected in this budget seems to prioritise the wealthy elite over the well-being of the majority.

The lack of concern for our nation’s educators and ordinary citizens raises fundamental questions about the PPP’s commitment to the principles of democracy. Is the PPP truly dedicated to upholding the rule of law and respecting the democratic process? Evidence shows that they are not.

The ongoing strike by teachers is not just a plea for better wages; it is a cry for recognition of their pivotal role in shaping the minds of the next generation. The fact that the PPP officials’ children – and those of PPP sycophants and cronies – attend private schools while teachers at public schools struggle for fair pay reveals a stark contrast in priorities, and a total lack of ethics.

In the face of these challenges, we must question whether the PPP officials are driven and motivated by a sense of patriotism or personal gain. Corruption allegations circulating in the corridors of power only fuel concerns that the interests of the people are being sacrificed for personal agendas of the Pradoville people. As our nation now has a path to real prosperity – owing to oil – the PPP’s disregard for the rights and well-being of ordinary Guyanese is an ominous sign.

Analysts repeatedly and consistently write that the current status quo is untenable – it cannot continue; something must give way at some point. It is time for the PPP government to reassess its approach, honour the constitution, and engage in meaningful dialogue with Guyanese to find resolution that truly benefits all the people. Our country deserves a government that listens to the needs of ordinary citizens, prioritises their well-being, and steers the nation towards a future where prosperity reaches every corner, not just the privileged few who occupy and surround Freedom House. The uncaring attitude displayed by the PPP cannot be the legacy we want for our beloved nation.
