The Institute for Action Against Discrimination (IFAAD) has reiterated solidarity with public school teachers who are on industrial action. On Monday teachers proceeded on strike demanding the Government meet with their union. The strike is the result of Government’s refusal to engage the Guyana Teachers Union (GTU) in collective bargaining.
IFAAD, in a statement issued by its Chairman, former Mayor Pt. Ubraj Narine, is urging teachers nationwide to remain steadfast until their demands are met by Minister of Education, Priya Manickchand. The Institute, a leading non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting equality and fairness, says teachers across the country must not yield until their demands are.
The call comes in response to the proposal put forth by the Teachers Union since 2020 and Government’s lack of concerted action to address the pressing concerns and urgent needs. IFAAD says it is crucial to emphasise that failure to unite and demand justice now will pave the way for more severe implications of neglect and disparity in the future, under the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government.
As an organisation committed to promoting equitable treatment and ensuring the rights of workers, particularly those in the education sector, the Institute for Action Against Discrimination says it stands firmly behind the teachers’ call for immediate action. “We believe that it is essential for the teachers themselves to assert their rights in solidarity with the GTU and stand against any form of discrimination or neglect they may encounter.”
Underscoring the valuable role of teachers in shaping the nation’s future, IFAAD emphasises that their needs must be prioritised. The organisation has made a pitch for teachers to have “adequate remuneration, improved working conditions, access to necessary resources, and professional development opportunities [which] are just a few of the critical aspects that should be addressed to ensure the success of both teachers and students alike.” The institute asserts the failure of government to address these concerns not only undermines the quality of education but also perpetuates systemic discrimination and inequality.
“We firmly believe that teachers are the backbone of our education system and should be valued accordingly,” said Narine. “The neglect of teachers’ needs ultimately hinders the progress and development of our nation’s children. It is high time for the Minister of Education to demonstrate a genuine commitment to fostering a harmonious and supportive environment for our educators.”
The organisation is also calling on all teachers, nationwide, to join forces, make their voices heard, and demand the Education Minister’s attention and action, “because only through the unity of teachers and their resolute stand against injustice can real change be achieved.”
Now is the time, the organisation urges, to stand up and fight for the rights and dignity of teachers as vital contributors to Guyana’s society. “Together, we can ensure a fair and equitable education system that will empower generations to come.”
