Dear Editor,
As an attendee at the India 75 Republic Anniversary Reception, I was deeply disheartened by the lack of respect shown towards Indo-Guyanese culture and traditions. The dress code adopted by the Honourable Minister Gail Teixeira, acting as President of Guyana, was a clear indication of the insensitivity displayed by the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) government towards the community they claim to represent. Moreover, their failure to acknowledge the historic celebration of Shri Ramjanamboomi highlights a troubling pattern of neglect. Indo-Guyanese (Hindus) citizens must unite and voice their disapproval of these disrespectful actions.
Disrespect towards Indo-Guyanese Culture:
The dress code chosen by Hon. Minister Gail Teixeira at the India 75 Republic Anniversary Reception was nothing short of embarrassing. By attending such a significant event in attire that seemingly disregards the importance of cultural representation, the PPP government has shown a stunning lack of respect for Indo-Guyanese customs and traditions. This choice demonstrates a disregard for the sentiments of the Indo-Guyanese community, who rightfully expect their leaders to honor and value their heritage.
Failure to Acknowledge Historic Moments:
The recent celebration of Shri Ramjanamboomi stands as an important moment in both Hindu and Indo-Guyanese history. However, it is deeply disappointing that the Ali-led PPP government did not acknowledge this monumental occasion. By neglecting to recognize and commemorate the significance of Shri Ramjanamboomi, the PPP administration has once again failed to display an inclusive and respectful approach towards Indo-Guyanese citizens. This lack of inclusivity only serves to deepen the divide among various cultural and religious communities within Guyana.
Absence of High Commissioner:
Additionally, the absence of a High Commissioner to India, a crucial diplomatic position, further highlights the PPP government’s disregard for Indo-Guyanese representation and cultural bonds. India holds great importance for Indo-Guyanese citizens, as it is the land of their ancestry. The presence of a High Commissioner would not only facilitate strong bilateral relations but also demonstrate the administration’s commitment to representing the interests of the Indo-Guyanese community.
Indo-Guyanese Must Stand Up:
It is essential that Indo-Guyanese citizens collectively address these concerns and stand up against the government’s negligence. Our culture and heritage deserve to be respected and acknowledged by those in power. By accepting the PPP government’s disregard, we further perpetuate the notion that our community’s contributions and identity can be easily overlooked. It is time for us to unite and voice our dissent against these actions that demean our culture.
The India 75 Republic Anniversary Reception should have served as an occasion for celebration, unity, and the recognition of Indo-Guyanese contribution to Guyana’s history. Regrettably, the inappropriate dress code of the Honorable Minister Gail Teixeira, the failure to acknowledge Shri Ramjanamboomi, and the absence of a High Commissioner to India have highlighted the PPP government’s disinterest in respecting the Indo-Guyanese community and cultural heritage. It is now the responsibility of Indo-Guyanese citizens to come together, raise their voices, and demand the respect they rightfully deserve. Let us strive for a future where our culture is valued, and our traditions are honored with the dignity they deserve.
Yours truly,
