In today’s world, education holds the key to unlocking potential. The life of 21-year-old teacher Jada Payne is a living example of the transformational potential of tenacity and passion. Payne, a young, driven person, recently marked a noteworthy life achievement by graduating from the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE) with a teaching credential.

Her story is an inspiration to those who think that education can have a significant influence on influencing the future, in addition to being a personal achievement.

During her time at Vreed-en-Hoop Secondary, Jada struggled in her math classes. On one occasion, though, Jada felt embarrassed by her math grade because her teacher pointed it out. She began attending classes in an effort to improve her grades, and over time, those grades increased.

Before CXC, Payne’s mother departed Guyana, and she moved in with a relative, who forbade her from attending her after-school activities. Concerned about Jada’s performance at CXC, her social studies teacher contacted her; however, in an unexpected turn of events, Jada took first place in both social studies and human and social biology (HSB).

Early in life, Jada developed a passion for both teaching and learning. Growing up in the small village of Fyrish, Region Six, she was always captivated by the magic that unfolded within the walls of her school. She was inspired to become a teacher one day and change the lives of young people by the committed educators who kindled her curiosity.

“I remember teaching and beating plants (my imaginary students) when I was younger. Being a teacher has always been my dream job since I was a young child. My family is filled with teachers, and I believe that also fueled my passion to get a career as a teacher…,” Jada said.

Further, she added, “I want to make a difference.. I want to better the students of today’s society. I want to be the best teacher to my students..”

There were obstacles to overcome on the path to becoming an educator. Payne occasionally felt as though her aspirations would be dashed by social expectations and financial limitations. Nevertheless, she overcame these challenges with unwavering resolve, seizing every chance that presented itself. It was crucial to her journey that she had mentors by her side.

She described her CPCE experience as being bittersweet. “I was able to meet a lot of colleagues at CPCE, but it was difficult; occasionally we had blackouts, which resulted in late assignments. COVID-19 then came along and limited in-person meetings. I had to turn my backyard into a garden as an Agri major to plant cash crops and finish my crop production portfolio. Online classes and exams were also a problem for me, as I wasn’t tech savvy. I also felt like face-to-face classes were better for me; however, overtime, I learned how to use the platform,” Jada told this publication.

On 29th November 2023, Jada donned her cap and gown, marking the culmination of years of hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. As she walked across the stage to receive her degree, she not only celebrated her personal achievement but also acknowledged the collective efforts of those who supported her along the way. Friends, family, mentors, and teachers—they had all played a role in shaping the educator she had become.

Now a certified teacher, Sarah is ready to embark on a new chapter of her life. Armed with knowledge, empathy, and a genuine passion for teaching, Jada is set to make a positive impact on the community. Her goal is not merely to impart knowledge but to inspire a love for learning, encourage critical thinking, and foster a sense of community within her classroom.

Jada Payne’s journey from a small-town dreamer to a certified teacher is a story of resilience, determination, and the transformative power of education. As she steps into the world of teaching, she carries with her the belief that education is not just a means to an end but a lifelong journey of exploration and growth. Through her dedication and passion, she serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring educators and a reminder of the profound influence teachers can have on shaping the future of generations to come.
