Maduro’s behaviour is political suicide

President Nicolás Maduro recent aggressive actions have clearly sparked significant controversy and attracted international attention and indignation. While the Venezuelan president may perceive this move as a strategic political maneuver, it is actually political suicide for Maduro and his administration.

First and foremost, Venezuela’s territorial claim over Essequibo is not a new development but a longstanding, unfounded position. It is not a dispute; it is a baseless, foolish opinion. The international community knows this. Therefore, Maduro’s decision to aggressively assert Venezuela’s control over Essequibo, is alienating other countries, escalating tensions in the region, and giving rise to perceptions of instability. No right thinking government would welcome such negative developments.

Internationally, Maduro’s move is being met with strong, justifiable opposition. For example, the United States and the United Kingdom have evidently taken a pro-Guyana position. The global community generally values stability and adherence to international law, and any attempt to forcibly claim territory – by any country – raises concerns about the Rule of Law and diplomatic norms. Nations across the world are condemning Maduro’s actions. The potential for sanctions against Venezuela, and increased isolation are real. This isolation could exacerbate the existing economic challenges facing Maduro’s country, pushing it further into economic turmoil and political chaos.

Additionally, Maduro’s aggression comes at a time when Venezuela is already grappling with major internal crises, including economic collapse, widespread poverty, high inflation, brain drain, and political instability. As such, Maduro’s focus on external matters – especially one that lacks merit and immediate relevance to the well-being of the Venezuelan people – will most certainly divert attention from urgent domestic issues. This diversion will further erode public trust in Maduro’s leadership, which is already low. Right-thinking Venezuelan citizens will question the priorities of an administration that engages in controversial territorial claims while the nation faces pressing internal challenges.

The economic ramifications of Maduro’s actions are huge. Venezuela’s economy is already fragile, with hyperinflation, unemployment, and a declining GDP. Engaging in external aggression, particularly one that involves potential resource exploitation – if he starts military hostilities, for example – will strain diplomatic and economic relations with Venezuela’s allies.

Additionally, Maduro’s aggressive stance on Essequibo is  drawing the attention of international organisations, such as the United Nations, Organisation of American States, and CARICOM, all of which have condemned Maduro’s actions.  The international community generally relies on established frameworks for conflict resolution, and this unilateral claim – without diplomatic negotiations – is being seen as a violation of these principles. Venezuela is likely to find itself increasingly isolated on the diplomatic stage, diminishing its ability to garner support for its political and economic agendas.

Furthermore, the timing of Maduro’s territorial claim is noteworthy. As geopolitical dynamics evolve, strategic alliances and partnerships are becoming increasingly crucial. Maduro’s move could isolate Venezuela at a time when diplomatic ties and collaborations are vital for navigating global challenges. Those challenges include the ongoing climate crisis and the socio-economic setbacks arising from the COVID-19 pandemic, among others. A politically isolated Venezuela could find it difficult to secure international assistance and cooperation in addressing these issues.

Nicolás Maduro’s assertion of Venezuela’s claim over Essequibo is a risky and potentially detrimental political move. The consequences of such actions extend beyond the immediate territorial issue; it affects Venezuela’s international standing, economic stability, and internal cohesion. The potential backlash from the global community, coupled with the diversion of attention from pressing domestic issues, paints a picture of political suicide for Maduro and his administration.
