Surinamese Party Seeks International Court Intervention Over Guyana’s Territorial Claim

By: Dil Bar Irshad >>>>>> The Surinamese political party, Politiek Trafasie Suriname, has catapulted itself onto the international stage by sending a letter to Joan Donoghue, the President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ). Dated December 1, this diplomatic overture comes in the wake of an incident in which Guyana presented a map during an ICJ session, depicting the contentious Tigri region as part of its territory. Suriname, however, maintains its claim over the same territory, thereby escalating the ongoing territorial dispute between the two South American nations.

A Historical Dispute

At the heart of this diplomatic crisis lies the 2023 Guayana Esequiba dispute. This territorial conflict between Guyana and Venezuela has its roots in historical claims by colonial powers — Spain, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. The area in contention, Guayana Esequiba, is rich in natural resources, most notably oil, further fuelling the dispute. Venezuela has conducted military exercises in the area and has claimed this expansive territory for decades, despite it constituting over two-thirds of Guyana.

Stirring the Hornet’s Nest

The tension surrounding this territorial dispute has been further exacerbated by Guyana’s move to take bids for offshore oil exploration blocks. A significant new find announced in October has added fuel to the fire. The Maduro government in Venezuela expects an overwhelmingly positive result from a referendum, which includes proposals for the creation of a Venezuelan province to be called ‘Guyana Essequibo’, thereby giving the inhabitants Venezuelan citizenship. Critics, however, see this as a distraction and have called for its suspension.

The Road Ahead

While the ICJ has claimed jurisdiction over the territory, a final decision might take years. Venezuela insists on a bilateral resolution with Guyana. Nevertheless, the referendum serves as a test of public support and could potentially shape the future of the Esequibo region. Amidst these complex dynamics, the intervention sought by Politiek Trafasie Suriname adds another layer of intrigue to the territorial dispute. (BNN)
