Academy Series

West Indies Academy vs Emerging Ireland

1st List A (50 overs)

Venue: Coolidge Cricket Ground

Toss: West Indies Academy won and bowled

Result: West Indies Academy won by 7 wickets

Player of the Match: Jordan Johnson

Scorecard: Windies Match Center

Left-arm spinners Ashmead Nedd and Joshua Bishop bowled out Emerging Ireland to set up West Indies Academy’s series-leveling victory in their three-match 50-over series on Sunday.

Choosing to bowl first, the hosts bundled out the visitors for 103 in the 28th over with Nedd (3-12) and Bishop (3-19) grabbing three wickets apiece. Captain Nyeem Young (2-23) and fellow seamer McKenny Clarke (2-20) both chipped in as well, the pair contributing to the early slide that saw the visitors crash to 48-5 at the start of the 16th over.

In reply, West Indies Academy slipped to 40-3 in the ninth over before teenaged left-hander Jordan Johnson lashed a bold unbeaten 40 off 21 balls and Teddy Bishop, a brisk 32 not out off 25 balls, to see their side over the line in the 16th over.

The series is now level 1-1 and returns to Sir Vivian Richards Stadium on Tuesday for the finale. First ball is 9am (8am Jamaica).

Johnson’s counter-attacking innings was the highlight of the day and earned him the Player of the Math award. He blasted four fours and three sixes in an unbroken, 63-run fourth wicket stand with Teddy Bishop who counted five fours and a six, as West Indies Academy wrapped up a comfortable win in the end.

Johnson’s first maximum was a superb cut over backward point and he fooled up two balls later with an equally amazing slap off the back foot which sailed high over long off.

“I feel good to get among the runs in my first match and to help the team win and stay in the series. Coming out today I was confident and looking to get among the runs. Credit to our bowlers for the way they bowled and provided us,” he said after the match.
