Motion of GTUC’s commitment to UN 2030 Sustainable Development Goals passed

At the Guyana Trades Congress (GTUC) 5th Triennial Delegates Conference held between November 8th to 10th 2023 several motions were passed. Below is the motion on the United Nations (UN) 2030 Sustainable Development Goal which was unanimously passed on 9th November:-

Guyana Trades Union Congress  recognises the UN 2030 Agenda and Its Sustainable Development Goals

Be it resolved that the 5th Triennial Delegates Conference

Aware of the importance of Sustainable Development Goal 8 which is about promoting inclusive and sustainable economic growth, employment and decent work for all;

AWARE THAT aspects of SDG 8 as it relates to employment and decent work fall within the purview/oversight of trade unions which seek to secure for their members, fair income, equality and safe working conditions;

CONSCIOUS that several groups such as persons with basic education and little or no skills and persons living in some rural areas and in the hinterland and other remote areas have little access to jobs;

COGNISANT of the role of the Guyana Trades Union Congress as an association of major unions and the duty of trade unions to Protect labour rights;

COGNISANT ALSO OF Article 23 of the Constitution of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana which provides inter alia, for State and trade unions co-operation;

MANDATES the Central Executive of the Guyana Trades Union Congress to establish a National Technical Working Group to work ensure the alignment of selected policies of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) using an SDGs 8 approach as well as ensuring that Constitutional rights are protected;

ALSO MANDATES the Central Executive of the Guyana Trades Union Congress to establish a Secretariat to advance the conversation, to develop action plans and aid in resolving labour-related conflicts in Heritage Villages-Communities

Mandates the National Technical Working Group to be formed to also be involved in the design, planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation at the level of the State.
