The Roraima Learning Trust (RLT) is excited to announce the winner of the “Wuk Yuh Waise” Challenge, a pivotal component of the Enhancing Community Wellness (ECW) Pilot Project aimed at reducing chronic health conditions in 150 participants residing on the East Coast of Demerara. Today, Rosana Thomas from Haslington emerged as the triumphant participant who shed an impressive 13 lbs in body weight and 2 inches from her waist through dedication to a healthier lifestyle.

The monthly challenge is part of the Greater Guyana Initiative (GGI) funded community wellness project, spearheaded by the Roraima Learning Trust. Its primary objective is to combat prevalent health issues such as diabetes and hypertension by promoting healthier living among participants. This project was officially launched on August 30 at 3t EnerMech, Lusignan, East Coast Demerara.

Throughout this month’s challenge, participants were motivated to focus on specific fitness aspects each week, including leg work, push-ups, core and endurance, and running. They tracked their progress by submitting initial waist circumference and weight measurements, with the ultimate goal of achieving positive changes in these metrics through improved diet and exercise.

Stephen Patterson, Project Manager for the RLT, noted the positive outcomes already achieved through this initiative and encouraged all participants to continue using and sharing the knowledge gained. He emphasised, “Each month, a top performer is rewarded for winning the monthly challenge. This is our second winner and we are happy to know that persons are being effectively equipped with the tools they need to lead healthier lives, benefiting not only themselves but also their families, communities, and ultimately, the entire nation.”

The project’s objectives include providing valuable dietary and lifestyle information through accessible platforms and leveraging the Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs) and healthcare networks to reach a broader audience.

Director of the RLT, Mr. Kojo Parris, emphasised the importance of friendly competition within the project, stating, “The challenges are designed to empower individuals to become the best version of themselves, both physically and mentally. We believe that through this collective effort, participants will not only improve their waistlines and weight but also enhance their overall well-being.” He further added, “By encouraging individuals to operate in groups, it creates a supportive environment where they can help and motivate each other to achieve their health and fitness goals.”

The Greater Guyana Initiative (GGI) is a US$100 million, 10-year investment made by the Stabroek Block partners ExxonMobil Guyana, Hess Guyana Exploration Limited, and CNOOC Petroleum Guyana Limited. This initiative is dedicated to developing the local workforce, enhancing human capacity, advancing education, and improving healthcare, all aimed at promoting sustainable economic diversification for a thriving Guyana.

As the team gears up to expand its initiatives nationwide, pending the outcome of the pilot, the RLT remains committed to making strides toward a healthier, stronger, and more vibrant community.
