In an iconic moment for Guyana, the nation’s first all-girls robotics team embarked on their journey to represent the country at the prestigious First Global Robotics Challenge in Singapore. The enthusiastic team departed earlier today on a Caribbean Airlines flight, with connections in the UK and Qatar, before their final destination of Singapore.

The First Global Robotics Challenge, a paramount event in the tech world, will witness participation from a whopping 190 countries this year. Guyana has proudly made its presence felt at every edition of the challenge since its inauguration in 2017. The spirit and dedication of Team Guyana is indeed commendable, especially considering the setback they faced the previous year when they were denied visas to Geneva, Switzerland – a disappointment faced by only three teams.

Rather than letting the setback deter them, the young achievers utilized the experience as a catalyst for positive change. Redirecting their energies, they became instrumental in instructing STEM clubs within their schools and broader communities. Karen Abrams, the Director of STEMGuyana, spoke highly of the team’s indomitable spirit, stating, “These young women have exhibited an incredible blend of resilience, strength, and dedication. Not only did they excel academically, but they also committed to nurturing their peers and community children through STEM clubs. Their unwavering spirit resonates with the vision of the Guyana we all aspire to build.”

This year’s challenge, themed ‘Hydrogen Horizons’, demands teams to innovate and compete with robots that can simulate the process of electrolysis. Through this, the participants will recreate the renewable energy extraction process by splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen.

The event offers more than just a competitive platform. It’s a melting pot of cultures and brilliant minds. Students get the golden opportunity to engage, network, and form lifelong bonds with peers hailing from different corners of the globe. Together, they navigate through exhilarating games that are both intricate and thrilling.

As Guyana’s young tech ambassadors take on this global stage, the entire nation sends forth a wave of good wishes, optimism, and pride, hoping that these budding engineers not only uplift the country’s name but also inspire many more to follow in their trailblazing footsteps.
