In a world filled with endless possibilities and aspirations, there are individuals like Nia Williams, who effortlessly stand out. Blending her love for the law and poetry, Nia has positioned herself as a true force to be reckoned with. However, chasing dreams often requires financial support, and Nia is now seeking assistance to fund her tuition at Hugh Wooding Law School. Williams placed amongst the top 15 Bachelor of Laws students at the University of Guyana this year and will be graduating with distinction and a 3.5 GPA.
“Based on the merits of my academic performance and my application to the Hugh Wooding Law School, I was awarded the opportunity to pursue my Legal Education Certificate in Trinidad and Tobago for the 2023/2024 academic year,” she said. Nia took a leap of faith and made her way to Trinidad and Tobago to register at the Hugh Wooding Law School. However, the reality is that furthering her legal studies may not continue because of her financial circumstances. Therefore she is soliciting the public’s assistance, for her to achieve that goal.
In 2017, Nia participated in the 3rd Annual Youth Parliament where she realised her purpose. Nia stated that “my goal to become an Attorney-at-Law was cemented by my election as Prime Minister and Leader of the Government’s side of the house which won the debates that year. A passion was ignited within me and the experience revealed what I believed to be my purpose and avenue to create change.” In 2019, she graduated from St. Stanislaus College as an Honour Roll student and the Best Graduating Arts Student. She was awarded for her outstanding academic performance at CSEC, attaining 13 passes and a certificate in Business Studies. Thereafter, she acquired an Associate of Arts in Humanities – Law at The Bishops’ High School.
Nia mentioned that in 2022, upon completion of her first year of the LLB, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Dr. Paloma Mohamed-Martin presented her with an Award of Excellence for having the highest GPA in her class for that academic year.
In March of 2022, she also graduated from the Femme Lex Cohort which is a legal entrepreneurship mentorship programme birthed by the Erline Bradshaw Foundation which focuses on the development of disadvantaged women in the legal field. In addition, she received the FLC Excellence in Perseverance Award for her extraordinary persistence and dedication despite all odds.
Nia’s student experience was never purely academic; at St. Stanislaus College and The Bishops’ High, as she was properly moulded into a leader. “There I seized the opportunity to serve in various leadership roles for student clubs over the years including Saints Hockey Club and TBHS Law Society. I have also fulfilled the duties of First Year Representative of the University of Guyana Law Society (UGLS) in the 2021/2022 academic year, as well as, Public Relations Officer of Moot Court Guyana and President of the University of Guyana Law Society,” Williams told this publication.
She added: “These responsibilities have allowed me to be a well-rounded individual equipped to handle the workload at the Hugh Wooding Law School. While my educational and extracurricular background is exemplary, my advocacy career has motivated my studies through my volunteer experiences with Saints Hockey Club, Guyana Hockey Board, ROPE Foundation, Foundation HOPE, Tamukke Feminists, and the Rotaract Club of Georgetown Central.”
Her contributions included youth engagement, planning and executing events and content creation for public education. Most notably, her advocacy efforts were acknowledged in 2022 as a nominee for the Orange the Runway Arts Advocacy Award based on her ‘artivism’ through Spoken Word Poetry centred around sexual and domestic violence that children and women alike are faced with.
“This award came on the heels of my participation in Guyana Talent Search – a platform and opportunity that transformed my life as a poet and advocate. Presently, my advocacy continues with the Rotaract Club of Georgetown Central. “For the past year, my community service has continued with the Rotaract Club of Georgetown Central where I was recently able to lead our back-to-school project catering to the needs of 95 children in Crane Squatting Area,” Nia highlighted.
Nia relayed that as a survivor of sexual violence, her aim is to contribute to a legal system where victims of all forms of gender based violence can not only tell their stories, but also seek safe and fair representation.

Because of generous donations from friends and family Nia was able to pay the first instalment as a requirement to register. However, Nia is still required to pay 4 other instalments of $700,000 GYD each over the next 9 months, for her Hugh Wooding Law School tuition.
“I am grateful for your kind consideration to help support my legal education. If given the opportunity to pursue my LEC with your financial support, I would ensure to pay it forward by emulating your legacy of giving back to talented students that may not be able to pursue their dreams. It is my intention to eventually develop a scholarship fund that is sustainable and beneficial to passionate students with a substantial history of advocacy and service,” the budding attorney stated.
