Mayor of the City of Georgetown Endorses Green Space for LGBTIQ+ Monument

Mayor of the City of Georgetown, Pt. Ubraj Narine, expressed support for the establishment of a dedicated green space to house an LGBTIQ+ monument. The decision, which the city lauded in a release, as a landmark is seen as a significant development that came as a result of ongoing advocacy efforts by the Society Against Sexual Orientation Discrimination (SASOD) Guyana, a leading organisation working towards equality and inclusion for the LGBTIQ+ community.

Recognising the importance of representation and the need to create safe spaces for all citizens, Mayor Narine agreed to allocate land within the city to honour the community. This green space will serve as a monument to celebrate diversity, promote inclusivity, and commemorate the struggles and achievements of the LGBTIQ+ community in Georgetown.

The decision to establish a dedicated green space for an LGBTIQ+ monument signifies a significant step forward in creating a more inclusive and tolerant society, fostering respect and understanding for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. It reflects the City of Georgetown’s commitment to human rights and the belief that every citizen should be treated with dignity and respect.

SASOD Guyana in turn, commended the Mayor’s progressive stance and acknowledged the efforts of all individuals and organisations who have tirelessly advocated for this important milestone. The establishment of an LGBTIQ+ monument and green space will not only serve as a symbol of pride for the community but also as a beacon of hope and acceptance for future generations.

SASOD Guyana said the organisation remains committed to working collaboratively with the City of Georgetown to ensure the successful implementation of this initiative. The organisation plans to engage stakeholders, including community members, artists, and urban planners, to develop a design and plan that reflects the diverse experiences and aspirations of the LGBTIQ+ community.

SASOD Guyana also called on all residents of Georgetown to embrace this opportunity for growth and understanding, fostering a city where diversity is celebrated, and every individual can live authentically without fear of discrimination or prejudice.
