The Guyana Olympians Association recently unveiled a bust of Guyana’s only Olympic medallist, Mr. Michael ‘Mike’ Parris.  Parris competed in the bantamweight (54 kg) division at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Soviet Union, where he earned a bronze medal, holding the coveted title of being Guyana’s first ever and only Olympic medalist. He is also the only pugilist from the English-speaking Caribbean to achieve this feat. The bust, unveiled on May 18th May was crafted by Keith Agard in honour of Parris’ 1980 achievement. It is located on the Merriam’s Mall, Shiv Chanderpaul Drive between Church Street and North Road.
