The Institute For Action Against Discrimination (IFAAD), in a statement, said the organisation has received with great sorrow and pain the shocking news of the death of 19 children and injuries sustained by more than 35 in a fire that engulfed a female dormitory at Mahdia Secondary School on Sunday, May 21, 2023.

In the release signed by the Secretary, Mr. Lelon Saul, it was made known that he and the entire IFAAD share with the bereaved families and people of Region 8, more especially the Indigenous community, the feelings of great loss at this time of deep sorrow.

The body, in calling for a Commission of Inquiry (COI) into the incident, also wishes a quick recovery to the injured in the tragic incident, and is urging the government to implement and enforce robust building safety measures across the country. May the Almighty God rest the souls of the departed in eternal peace, the organisation shared.

President Irfaan Ali last evening announced plans to establish a COI. The announcement comes after mounting calls by individuals and organisations demanding the establishment of one to unearth the cause (s) of the tragedy and make recommendations to avoid recurrence.
