“The recent news of the confiscation of the mobile phone of the Ministry of Home Affairs Permanent Secretary, Ms. Mae Toussaint Jr. Thomas, has caused a stir in the nation. The government’s response to this incident has left many with more questions than answers,” says opposition parliamentarian Geeta Chandan-Edmond.

“As an opposition parliamentarian, I strongly believe that it is the government’s duty to provide clarity and accountability to the people they serve,” she adds.

Guyana, Türkiye move to strengthen parliamentary cooperation

“It has been 18 days since the incident, and yet there has been no significant update on the status of Ms. Thomas, nor has there been any indication of accountability or administrative action taken. This is unacceptable and concerning for the citizens of our nation,” expresses Chandan-Edmond.

“Therefore, I call upon the government to take immediate action and provide answers to the people. I also reiterate the need for an independent investigation into this matter. It is imperative that the Permanent Secretary is sent on leave pending the investigation,” she emphasizes.

“The nation deserves transparency and accountability from its government. As we await answers, I urge the government to prioritize the welfare and trust of the people. It is only through accountability that we can move forward as a nation,” Chandan-Edmond concludes.
