Women Lawyers Assoc and UNICEF partner in fight against violence

The Guyana Association of Women Lawyers (GAWL) partnered with the United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) to strengthen its reach and action in the fight against Violence against Children and Women.

This collaboration led to GAWL and UNICEF signing a partnership agreement on May 24, 2022 wherein UNICEF agreed to provide cash assistance to GAWL to support its several projects aimed at achieving its motto, i.e. ‘Women Supporting Justice and Equality’.

GAWL visited Lethem on 11th November of 2022, and held a school outreach at the St Ignatius Secondary school and met with in excess of 100 students and educated them on how they can become a lawyer, Protection from Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault. A public outreach in a Townhall-style was later held under the Benab at the Takatu Hotel, Lethem. where members of its Association provided guidance on various areas of the law. Courtesy calls were made to the Mayor and Commander and they were presented with GAWL factsheets.

The GAWL has planned further informative and sensitization sessions that will be held in Linden on January 28, 2023 at the Consumer Goods Complex (Courts Tarmac) and Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara on February 4, 2023.

The aims of these sessions are to raise awareness to members about various areas of the las by offering free legal advice and where how they can access the courts.
