The Alliance For Change (AFC) said it has received reports the Guyanese people are been lied to, and was able to confirm, that Mr. Charrandass Persaud, the embattled High Commissioner to India is scheduled to be a “Guest of Honour” at the India Economic Trade Organisation’s (IETO) reception on Friday, November 25, 2022.

The IETO is an official organ of the Government of India.

Further, information in hand, the party said, is that both Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Hugh Todd and President Irfaan Ali are aware of, and approved Persaud’s continued functioning, and attendance at this state function.

The AFC “has communicated with the host to bring to his attention the disgrace the presence of Charrandass Persaud at the event can cause. The host, from all appearances, was unaware.”

All right-thinking Guyanese were embarrassed and insulted by Persaud’s behaviour and were relieved that he was being “recalled,” said the party in a release. “This, we were all led to believe, was with immediate effect [but] apparently, and most unfortunately, the nation was hoodwinked, to put it mildly, once again, by a callous, insensitive and dishonourable regime.”

After all, concluded the party, “Persaud’s behaviour now seems to have been embraced by the PPP, or could it have been a case of his mimicking theirs?”

President Ali on October 26, 2022.announced he had spoken with Persaud and they “agreed” he would be recalled. The announcement was made the day after a video did the social media rounds of Persaud verbally assaulting environmentalist and Professor Sonya Ghosh  in the vilest of term, using the crudest of sexual language.

Ghosh in her compliant to the New Delhi police stated she was “sexually harassed & her modesty was outraged & insulted by an individual who identifies himself as Charrandass Persaud, Guyana’s High Commissioner to India, residing at 339 Church Road, Vasant Kunj…on August 1, 2021.
