Gov’t attacks Opposition walking out Parliament after Speaker refused to hear Motion for Clean Voters List

Yesterday, Members from the A Partnership for National Unity and Alliance for Change (APNU+AFC) walked out of the National Assembly after Speaker Manzoor Nadir refused to allow for the hearing of their Motion for a clean Voters List.

Minister of Parliamentary Affairs and Governance, Ms. Gail Teixeira, during a joint press conference, on the sidelines of the 50th sitting of the National Assembly, said the opposition is irrelevant and had failed its constituencies by not sitting through yesterday’s session.

The minister accused Leader of the Opposition Leader, Mr. Aubrey Norton of “abdicating his responsibility as the Leader of the Opposition when we have bills here, Constitutional Reform which is an important one, which will allow the opposition parties and the government to have equal numbers.”

Public Works Minister, Mr. Juan Edghill, assailed the opposition for leaving the National Assembly and laying the blame on government’s refusal to discuss the high cost of living. He said the Opposition “walked out because they are intellectually lazy and politically immature. “

The People’s Progressive Party, in Government and Opposition, had a record of engaging in similar action, including showing open disregard for Speakers Raphael Trotman and Dr. Barton Scotland who were elected by the APNU+AFC given their parliamentary majority.
