Body of Venezuelan teen found floating in Demerara River

The partially decomposed body of a Venezuelan teen was found floating in the Demerara River, police have reported.

According to the police in Regional Division #4B, the body of Eliadis Martinez, a 19-year-old Venezuelan national, was discovered in the Demerara River within the vicinity of Brickery/Garden of Eden about 16:00 hours on Thursday (February 24).

Investigations have thus far revealed that at about 23:00hrs on Tuesday, February 22, Martinez, who resided at Land of Canaan also on the East Bank Demerara went to a birthday celebration not far from his residence, and there he was seen consuming alcohol. About 02:35hrs on Wednesday February 23, he left the party in a drunken state but did not reach home, neither was he seen since.

Several of his relatives and friends made checks for him but he was not seen. On Thursday, his body was recovered from the Demerara River and positively identified by his father. The body was examined for marks of violence but none was seen, however his lips appeared to have been eaten by fishes or sea creatures.

The body was taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was formally pronounced dead after which it was taken to the Memorial Gardens Mortuary for post mortem.
