Dear Editor,

I would like to vent my frustration with the system of Guyana Police Force (GPF)- Traffic Department on the issuing of driver’s license packages to potential drivers.

I’d like to share my experience as an example. In June 2021, I purchased my package to only be given the classes and theoretical examination dates in November 2021. When I questioned timeline, the officer who presented the package said all the other classes were booked already (from June to October 2022).

I patiently waited for the time when I would complete the theoretical exam to move on to the physical aspect in obtaining my driver’s license. Upon completing the exam, the instructing officer advised that results would be available in January 2022. To date, I am still awaiting the results of that exam, despite several queries at the station (I prefer not to state).

Mr. Editor, a close friend disclosed that she recently purchased her package (in February 2022) to be given the classes date in November 2022. Why should persons have to wait this long to obtain their driver’s license? Why is the Traffic Department still issuing packages when they simply cannot facilitate classes or mark the exam papers in a timely manner? When will the Traffic Department move away from the ancient way of conducting classes and exams – in this new age technology world?

As we aim to adapt to the ways of the first world countries; I would recommend that the traffic department introduce the means of conducting classes virtually and writing the exam at a location on a smart device that would mark and generate the results upon completing the exam. This I believe would save the traffic department and potential drivers a lot of time.

Sincerely,
Potential Driver
