Speeding car kills pedestrian at Providence

An unidentified man was killed by a speeding car on Sunday on the East Bank Demerara corridor in the vicinity of Providence.

The driver of the car (PZZ 1621), currently in police custody, was later found to be under the influence of alcohol. He has been identified as 34-year-old Shivendra Ramraj of Herstelling New Housing Scheme.

The accident is reported to have occurred around 18:55hrs.

Ramraj told police that he was proceeding south along the eastern carriageway of the East Bank Demerara corridor when the pedestrian ran across the road from east to west and landed in the path of his vehicle. The driver, however, admitted that he was driving at a fast rate of speed.

“On seeing the pedestrian do so, he applied his brakes to avoid a collision but the front centre potion of his vehicle collided with the pedestrian who fell onto the road surface and sustained injuries about his body,” the police reported.

The pedestrian was picked up in an unconscious state and placed into the said car and taken to the Diamond Diagnostic Centre where he was pronounced dead.

A breathalyzer test was conducted on the driver and the first test read 151 micrograms with the second test reading 161 micrograms of alcohol in his breath. He remains in custody as further inquiries are in progress.
