…held two-year-old child hostage
Four armed, masked men attacked and robbed murder accused Marcus Bisram and his family on Sunday at his No. 71 Village, East Berbice – Corentyne (Region Six) home.
Bisram, 31, recounted that the robbery occurred at about 19:30h during which time he was having a family gathering.
He told the media that upon entering his yard, the robbers instructed him and his relatives to go into the house where they [robbers] took all of their [Bisram and family] personal belongings. He explained that a two-year-old relative was held hostage during the daring robbery.
“One of them came to me and asked where my room was while pointing a gun to a two-year-old relative of mine. I couldn’t resist because two of them were following me and they held the child at gunpoint in front of me. They took eight cellphones, one of which belongs to me and the others belonging to my relatives. I won’t exaggerate on how much jewelry they took from my family members but on my behalf, they escaped with 2 of my gold bangles weighing 100-pennyweight each and a 100-pennyweight gold chain,” the man recounted.
He said too that he also had in his possession a diamond ring worth US$12,000, ($2,514,840 GY dollars) along with G$5M which he recently withdrew to pay his attorney fees for his ongoing court matter. The men also took his wallet containing US$2,000 together with seven credit cards.
“I recently took out the money and no one knew that I had that amount of money at home. However, I must say that the police acted swiftly and they were very professional. They arrived approximately 15 minutes after and they spent a lot of time trying to sort things out,” Bisram told reporters.
He related that his 24-year-old cousin was hurt during the ordeal during his objection to the requests by the bandits. The man was beaten with a cutlass across his head by one of the robbers.
Bisram explained that he did not have security for about three months but noted that no strange person or actions were observed in the community in the days leading up to the robbery.
“It’s normal for us to always lock up and stay inside but it was just so unexpected because about 20 of us were sitting here last night so nobody expected something like that to happen or for them to pop up on us like that,” he said noting that the quartet made good their escape on motorcycles which they had parked a few houses away from his.
Bisram is thankful for his life though he has lost millions in cash and jewelry. “I am not moved by the situation; I lost a lot but I wouldn’t let that break me,” he said.
No arrests have yet been made as police continue their investigation.
