Elderly man in apparent suicide

Police are investigating an alleged suicide committed by 72-year-old pensioner, Alimoon Narainedatt of Edingburgh Village, East Bank Berbice. Reports are that the suicide occurred on Thursday at about 13:50 hours at the said address.

Inquiries disclosed that on the said date, at about 13:40 hours, the man’s 47-year-old daughter who resides at the lower flat of the property and his wife were downstairs. Shortly after, his wife left to go upstairs and as she was making her way up the stairs, she heard a loud explosion. Upon entering the building, she found her husband lying in the doorway in a crouching position and in a pool of blood.

An alarm was raised and the police were summoned and responded and observed the man’s licensed semi-automatic, single barrel shotgun under his hand.

The victim was picked up and transported to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where the doctor on duty pronounced him dead. The body was subsequently taken to the Arokorium Funeral home where it awaits Post Mortem Examination
