Police have arrested a 34-year old man of Herstelling, East Bank Demerara (EBD) who abducted a one-day old baby on Tuesday at Tuschen Squatting Area, East Bank Essequibo (EBE).
According to reports, at about 20:45h 19-year-old Jennifer Goberdan (Mother of the child), was at her mother’s Tuschen Housing Scheme home, when the man, whom she shared a relationship with, walked into the house and demanded that she give the baby to him.
The teen refused and the suspect, angered by the refusal, drew a silver handgun from his left pants pocket and pointed it at her. The fearful mother gave the baby to the Herstelling man who made good his escape with the infant.
The matter was reported to the Tuschen Outpost shortly thereafter. Police in the Division were alerted and at the Vreed-en-Hoop Junction, a mini bus owned and driven by a 37-year-old male of Anna Catherina was intercepted by the Police.
The man was found in the minibus with a 24-year-old woman of Melanie, East Coast Demerara (ECD), who was holding the baby. The duo was arrested by the police and taken to the Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station and questioned.
The Melanie resident said that she does not know the suspect, but was asked to hold the baby just before the Police stopped the bus. Her story was confirmed by the suspect and statements were taken from her, after which she was released.
The suspect remains in custody and the baby was also handed over to the mother who visited the station.
Investigations are ongoing.
