Two murder accused and a robbery suspect escaped from the Lusignan Prison in the wee-hours of Saturday morning, using an improvised rope made of bed sheet.
Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels, made the disclosure hours the prison break occurred. The escapees have been identified as 48-year-old Phillip Jhogroo of Lot B3 Goed Intent Leguan; 18-year-old Mark Emmanuel of Grove Sea-dam (Squatting Area) East Bank Demerara; and 40-year-old Donald Baird of Lot 22 Hardina Street, Wortmanville. Baird and Jhogroo have been accused of murder while Emmanuel has been charged with robbery.
According to the Director of Prisons, the Officer in Charge of the Lusignan Prison (Holding Bay), Superintendent, Alstan Scott realized something was amiss at around 5:20hrs. “During a routine check, an improvised rope made of bed sheet was seen handing from the South Western corner of the prison fence. This, then prompted a physical muster, and it was discovered that three prisoners were unaccounted for,” Samuels detailed.
Further investigations revealed that the prisoners scaled the said South Western fence where the improvised rope was found. Further investigations revealed that the escape took place between 01:28hrs and 1:48hrs. The Guyana Police Force and Guyana Prison Service are conducting further investigations. “Every effort is being made to recapture the three (03) escapees,” Samuels assured.
He is also encouraging persons with information to come forward. “Family members and members of the public are advised not to offer any support to the escapees. Should you see them or have any information on their whereabouts, please contact the nearest Police Station,” the Prison Director urged.
