Being dubbed by the federal prosecutors as the“largest overseas drug bust ever”, the Belgian police have seized 11.5 tons of cocaine from Guyana, on the northeastern coast of South America. The news was moments ago reported by the Brussels Times which stated that Belgian prosecutors have now “dealt a new blow” to a recently disbanded drug gang led by a former Belgian police Chief.
According to federal prosecutors, the street value of the drug is estimated at €900 million or approximately GYD $222B. “[This is] the largest overseas drug bust ever, worldwide,” federal prosecutors said to Belgian media.
Counternarcotics prosecutors stated that they tracked the shipment from Guyana, on the northeastern coast of South America, and seized it upon its arrival at the Port of Antwerp.
Prior to this, in August 2020, customs officials in the Port of Hamburg — Germany’s largest seaport — reported one of the port’s largest drug busts after some 47 large packages of cocaine were found hidden between sacks of rice coming from Guyana.
Following an investigation, the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) contented that it found no evidence to suggest that the cocaine discovered in Germany came from Guyana.
