– badly beaten by two inmates

Aszim Shivgobin, a remand prisoner is hospitalised after he was badly beaten by two other prisoners who reportedly had intentions of killing him.

The incident, the Director of Prisons Gladwin Samuels said, occurred last Friday in Holding Bay 2 at the Lugisnan Prison at around 22:15hrs.

“Shivogbin sustained lacerations to all extremities and chest,” the Prisons Director detailed. Shivgobin is in a clinically stable condition, and remains hospitalized, under guard.

According to Samuels, the injured prisoner was able to identify his attackers. The suspected attackers were also positively identified by other prisoners.

“Quick response by Officers on duty with the assistance of other prisoners thwarted an attack on a second prisoner and resulted in both lives being saved,” Samuels further disclosed. He said the improvised weapon reportedly used has been retrieved.

It is alleged that Shivgobin and the other prisoner were targeted for execution by another prisoner.

The matter has been reported to the police and will be fully investigated so that charges can be laid against the relevant persons, the Prison Director assured.
