President Irfaan Ali on Tuesday visited six communities in East Canje, Berbice where 800 relief hampers were distributed to the residents as part of the government’s initiative to assist vulnerable households.

Those villages include: Gangaram Village, Betsy Ground, Goed Bananen Land, Adelphi’s Reliance and Canefield. Ali’s first visit on Tuesday morning was at Gangaram Village where he addressed dozens of persons and assured them that his government will continue to deliver on its promises while at the same time extending their roles as a government and interact with citizens locally, in order to listen to their plight and find possible solutions to the many issues they are faced with.

“This is why we have the Regional Executive Officer, the Regional Chairman, and all other Regional officials so that when you have problems in your community that need immediate attention, these are the people that we have on the ground to listen to your concerns and will liaise with us to address each matter accordingly, if it does require our intervention.”

A number of residents in Berbice received relief hampers from President Irfaan Ali on Tuesday

In his address to the residents Ali noted that they are committed to investing in communities around the Regions, more so, Region Six where thousands of sugar workers lost their jobs due to the closure of the Rose Hall and Skeldon Sugar estates back in 2017.

He also stated that the economic prospect as well as the living conditions in various communities within East Berbice Corentyne will certainly be improved. “In the coming days I will be announcing a number of measures that will seek to bring back more money in the pockets of our people as well as allow them to spend but in an economical way. This is a commencement of a series of projects and approaches by this government which will be more ‘People oriented’, listening to people, understanding them and see how best we can deliver.”

Very shortly, an emergency budget will be introduced to address critical issues and President Ali noted that the budget will also address a few minor, but important issues within various regions. On Sunday  the President along with the First Lady, Arya Ali donated in excess of 150 food hampers in Tiger Bay, Georgetown.
